Sea turtles! - Everyone loves the turtles. If you ever get a chance to do a turtle walk and watch them lay their eggs or help the hatchlings escape to the beach, do it! There is nothing like sitting next to a mother turtle and watching the tears running from her eyes as she is laying her eggs. Once she starts she won't stop until they are buried. But if she senses you before she starts, it is a hasty retreat back into the water. Wear your turtle jewelry charm to show you love the sea turtles.
If you have never seen them laying eggs or their
trail on the beach, this is what it looks like... it takes 10,000
turtle eggs to be laid, for one turtle to mature and repeat the
process. Their survival rate is that bad. This year for some
reason many adult turtles are washing up on the beaches from
the Carolinas to Florida, loggerheads, Kemp's Ridleys, leather
backs and greens. If you are headed to the coast on vacation,
why not stop by the patrol office and see if you can help out
or lend any support.
Now, most of the beaches have morning patrols that look for fresh nests and relocate the eggs to higher ground or a protected hatchery where the eggs can incubate safely from predators. When these little guys come out they are anxious to hit the surf! It is sad how few ever make it back to lay eggs of their own.
